The end of the pandemic has officially ended.
This makes two weeks in a row that both daily new cases and daily deaths have increased. This is especially discouraging, since at this time last year we were at only 234 deaths per day; they didn’t get above that level for 5 more weeks. So I want to officially declare that we’re on the upswing again, driven by the latest Omicron variant, BA.5 (although I don’t doubt that in a few weeks there will be another contender for Omicron variant of the Month. Those Omicrons – they’re real competitive siblings!).
But
what’s really chilling is comparing case numbers. In this week last year, we
had 14,000 daily new cases; now we’re at 131,000 – and just to remind you, this
doesn’t include any home testing results. We’re being swamped with new cases,
but everyone’s fat, dumb and happy. Of course, people will remain happy until
the hospitals fill up again and the deaths really start climbing.
I’m
definitely going to keep wearing a mask when indoors with more than a few
people. And avoiding crowded venues altogether.
